IOTA Launches New Membership Category for Optical Security Start-Ups
2 Jun 2026 | Press Release
The International Optical Technologies Association (IOTA) has launched a Start-Up Membership Programme to encourage innovation and collaboration to enhance the optical security ecosystem. The programme is designed for early-stage companies operating in optical technologies, optical variable devices (OVDs), secure authentication solutions, and related security applications.
The initiative reflects IOTA’s continued commitment to fostering collaboration and technological advancement across the global authentication and anti-counterfeiting industry.
According to IOTA, start-ups and deep-tech ventures are increasingly driving the development of next-generation security technologies. The new membership category will provide a structured platform connecting emerging innovators with established industry leaders, technology experts, and global security stakeholders.
Commenting on the launch, IOTA Chairman Dr Mark Deakes said: ‘ Start-ups are increasingly playing an important role in the innovation cycle of optical security and authentication technologies. As counterfeit threats continue to evolve, the industry must remain ahead through innovation, collaboration, and stronger technology partnerships. This programme will create opportunities for such emerging companies to engage directly with established industry leaders and contribute to the next generation of secure authentication solutions’.
The Start-Up Membership Programme is open to legally registered early-stage companies operating within IOTA’s scope of optical technologies, security features, and authentication systems. Eligible applicants should typically have no more than five years of operational history, annual turnover below £1 million, and at least one paying customer for a security-related application.
Under the programme, Start-Up Members will receive a range of industry benefits designed to support growth, visibility, and market engagement, including:
• Access to the Security Image Register (SIR), enabling members to register security images and devices within the global registry.
• Access to industry reports, IOTA Holography & Optical Technology News, and the Patent Newsletter.
• Networking and mentorship opportunities with established industry members and technology experts.
• Opportunities to showcase innovations through IOTA events and industry platforms.
The programme also introduces dedicated ‘IOTA Start-Up Member’ branding, allowing participating companies to strengthen industry visibility and highlight their affiliation with the association.
IOTA stated that the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen engagement with technology ecosystems, academia, incubators, and innovation-driven enterprises across the authentication and secure technologies sector.
Membership will be granted for a maximum period of two years at an annual fee of £1,300. The subsidised rate – approximately 50% of the standard Band 1 membership fee – is intended to provide early-stage companies with greater industry access while supporting business growth and market development.
At the end of the two-year period, members will either transition to full membership or exit the association.
The framework for the new membership category was formally incorporated into IOTA’s revised Articles of Association earlier this year.
